In our third Riffs episode, Lydia reviews the RTS Convention – an event for the great and the good from the TV and, to a point, OTT industries – which she attended in Cambridge last week (18/19 Sept. 2025). She tells me about:

  • The PSB roundtable (featuring Tim Davie, DG of the BBC, Carolyn McCall, Chief Exec of ITV, Sarah Rose, outgoing President of Channel 5, and Jonathan Allan, interim CEO of Channel 4)
  • The speech by Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
  • And the discussion around YouTube and levelling the playing field between linear and online TV in terms of regulation

An audience member at the Convention asked about the possibility of greater collaboration between the PSBs, perhaps in the form of a one-stop shop for PSB content. That segues Lydia and I into a conversation about Kangaroo 2.0 – a new version of the ill-fated Kangaroo 1, which was mooted as the UK’s kinda equivalent of Hulu in 2009 but which never managed to get (or hop) off the ground.

Two other things to note:

  1. Lydia had a power cut at home so we had to film the beginning twice!
  2. Because of that, we ran out of time. We’ll get into the two other topics we were supposed to talk about (content and advertising regulation) next week.
