Ben and I talk to Jonas Engwall, CEO of Bedrock Streaming, about the streaming platform ratio: technology and product costs, excluding content and marketing, as a proportion of streaming revenue. Drawing on research commissioned with the DPP, Jonas explains how this measure can help streamers benchmark their spending against peers and global giants such as Netflix. We explore why scale matters, the challenges for services operating in a single market, and whether partnerships or consolidation can help bring platform costs onto a more sustainable footing.

We also discuss streaming’s shift from a subscriber land grab towards profitability, the return of bundles, and the cost and complexity that fragmented sports rights create for viewers. Jonas reflects on the continuing role of both advertising and subscriptions, and the prospect of further consolidation among streamers and their technology suppliers. Finally, we consider how AI is accelerating disruption across the industry, whether a new balance will emerge, and the wider concerns surrounding the technology’s development.
