Ben and I compare notes on our first day at IBC, from Brightcove’s direction under Bending Spoons to demonstrations of TiVo Lens and Agent TiVo. We discuss whether a focus on profitability can coexist with continued innovation, and revisit two familiar ideas gaining new capabilities through AI: shopping for products spotted on screen and finding something to watch through conversational recommendations. One TiVo demo even manages to overcome my initial scepticism.
We also explore video analysis tools from Twelve Labs and Moments Lab, and the difference between understanding the video itself and searching its captions. Richer metadata can make content easier to find, but can it also generate more revenue? I recall an ITN archive project that relied on a team of human shot-listers to illustrate how much the process has changed. Finally, we share our early impressions of footfall and exhibitor presence, and consider what a seemingly quieter show might tell us about the industry’s mood.
